Product innovation for the worlds most respected broadcaster

Many years at the BBC across channels and product innovation. Starting with redesign of the flagship channels such as BBC three, then moving into product innovation, prototyping and launching YourPaintings, the largest online collection of public, and CPS Vivo, the short-form journalism platform.

BBC broadcast

Digital experiences often run parallel to broadcasting channels, serving as crucial companions to the on-air content. This included building the supporting online channel for BBC Space, where I helped extend the viewing experience beyond the television screen. I also worked on the channel experience for BBC Three, the BBC's 'youth' station, during a particularly transformative period—as it made the bold transition to becoming a streaming-only platform.

CPS Vivo

The principle behind Vivo is to build a lightweight responsive single page web application that is built on the cloud to support three key editorial workflows for stream management. With the following definitions:

  • "Stream": a time-ordered list of editorial content about a topic
  • "Content Creation": The ability to create, edit and publish shareable short-form tagged content for use in a stream
  • "Content discovery": Surface pan-BBC content tagged in linked data platform for potential inclusion in a stream
  • "Stream curation": The ability to manually select content from multiple sources for inclusion in a stream

The development of Vivo moved from MVP to Live, accompanied by multiple trials. It’s been the main reporting platform for live-commentary of BBC sport, alongside events such as the Glastonbury Festival.
